Robotic Knee Replacement Surgery Performed in City

A robotic-assisted knee replacement surgery was successfully performed on a 67-year-old man at the Lokmanya Hospital, by using Blue Belt Technologies' Navio surgical system-a proven technology in the United States. The hospital claims this is to be the first-ever robotic-assisted unicompartmental knee arthroplasty in India which was performed by Dr. Narendra Vaidhya in 35 minutes on the right knee of the patient that was completely damaged and severely deformed.

The patient was suffering from knee osteoarthritis which caused severe pain in his right knee. It also affected his quality of life. Beyond certain stage (stageII), medicines, physiotherapy, and other arthroscopic interventions are not useful in the treatment of arthritis and such patients require total replacement as a definitive treatment.
